Unilever: European IT Data Centres

Mission critical building management systems have been provided by Ematics for two geographically dispersed data centres. Works included full system design, installation, testing and commissioning of hot standby PLC systems, with SCADA and redundant remote I/O for the monitoring and control of cooling plant, standby generators, switchboards, and UPS equipment.The data centres house a large number of servers hosting mission critical applications. Maintaining an optimum temperature and humidity within the server rooms is essential to the efficient operations of the centre.
In addition to ‘monitor only’ systems, Ematics’ recent works have included localised ‘cell’ cooling, controlling temperature per aera based on the dynamic requirements of the different technologies throughout the centre.The following systems and services have been designed and installed:

Ematics have built resilience into the system from the beginning, such that if the server at one site should fail, the server at the other site is able to take over and itself provide SCADA functionality for both sites.
The latest systems now include hot standby PLCs and redundant I/O networks for the control of the cooling equipment. An Integrated SCADA application has been developed which provides supervisory control and monitoring for all BMS equipment across both data centres.
